Did Jesus think that He was gaining the church when He died upon the cross? Jesus did die to obtain “a people of his own possession” that is the church. If Jesus died to obtain the church, how does that change a person’s perspective of the church? Jesus promised that He would build the church (Matt 16:18). The apostle Paul described the structure of the church as God’s holy temple in whom His Spirit dwells. The apostle also described the leadership and the foundation of the God’s temple — the church. This lesson is the beginning of a series about how Jesus organized the church. With Jesus dying for the church and building the church, do you really know the essentials of how Jesus structured His church? Scripture Reading: Ephesians 2:11-17 (read by Gerrit Dekker)

What worries you? What causes you stress and frustration? Are you able to turn off your anxieties before bed? Jesus promises a peace that surpasses all understanding. This is a demonstration of God’s power that every Christian can experience. The peace of God can guard every believer’s heart and mind. The faith that comes through Jesus Christ gives believers a new way of positive thinking. This thinking is the reasonableness that Paul instructed Christians to make known to everyone. Within this context, Paul revealed that he learned to be content with little or much. The apostle declared, “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Consider what Paul really meant by this famous passage. Scripture Reading: Philippians 4:4-13 (read by Don Kovar)
Lesson by Scott Shifferd Recorded June 5, 2016 at the Dean Road church of Christ How can Christians have joy in the face of persecution? While in prison, the apostle Paul prioritized encouraging Christians. Instead of telling Christians avoid persecution, Paul warned of false teachers. He exhorted the Philippian Christians to rejoice in the Lord, and in the next sentence, he warned of look out for the dogs and evildoers who mutilate the flesh. With tears, the apostle described the enemies of the cross of Christ as “Their end is destruction, their god is their belly.” Paul taught these Christians to avoid the enemies’ earthly pursuits and choose to know Christ. Therefore, the apostle taught that a Christian must count all things as loss to gain Christ and know the power of His resurrection. This lesson considers how Christians must look forward to better things. Scripture Reading: Philippians 3:8-16 (read by Barry Rutkowski)
Lesson by Scott Shifferd Recorded May 29, 2016 at the Dean Road church of Christ What does Christian joy look like? This is not always what the world may expect. Joy with Christian humility appears as a contradiction to the world. Philippians 2 demonstrates that in Jesus Christ, Christians need not fear opponents of the faith. However, in the pursuit of joy, Christians will suffer for Christ’s sake. Jesus demonstrated a path to joy and a standard for Christian unity that includes self-sacrificial humility. This study will take a close look at this “paradox” and the example of Jesus Christ. Scripture Reading: Philippians 2:5-11 (read by Gene Bryant)
Lesson by Scott Shifferd Recorded May 22, 2016 at the Dean Road church of Christ Sharing appears to come natural to children. From a Christian home, children have a Gospel-tented perspective of the world. For them, sharing Jesus and His love is obvious and organic. Sharing the Gospel means more than evangelism. Giving the Gospel includes giving to the church’s eternal mission. The church’s eternal purpose is to proclaim the excellencies of God and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them and teaching them all that Christ commanded (Matt 28:19–20; Eph 3:9–10; 1 Pet 2:9). In Philippians 1, the apostle Paul revealed that giving to mission works is a participation in the Gospel, and that such fellowship brings great joy (Phil 1:3–7). How can Christians further advance the Gospel and increase their joy? Give. Scripture Reading: Philippians 1:3-8 (read by Barry Rutkowski)
Lesson by Scott Shifferd Recorded May 15, 2016 at the Dean Road church of Christ Her cousin adopted her as his own daughter when her parents died. She would grow to become a beautiful woman who would become the queen of the empire that ruled the world. With her power came the opportunity to save her people by risking her life. Her adoptive father, Mordecai, expressed to Queen Esther, “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” (Esth 4:12b). Esther demonstrated qualities that every Christian, man or woman, should desire to represent Jesus Christ. What were those qualities? Scripture Reading: Esther 4:12-17 (read by Chris Howell)
Lesson by Scott Shifferd Recorded May 8, 2016 at the Dean Road church of Christ Tired from a long journey, Jesus rested by Jacob’s well. Jesus asked from a woman at the well, “Give me a drink.” After her surprise, Jesus turned the conversation to offering her living water and then responding to her question about worship. Jesus revealed that God desires true worshipers who worship in Spirit and truth. What is worship in Spirit and truth? This sermon looks closely at the worship that Jesus proclaimed. Scripture Reading: John 4:20-24 (read by Chris Howell)
